FACTS ABOUT THE PET THIEF'S

It is an undeniable fact of life that cats and dogs are stolen. Evidence collected shows thieves to be systematic and well  organised.Petwatch Australia has collected from the general public information on the methods , sightings and in some cases the identity of the thieves.

Pewatch Australia does not wish to distress owners by giving to much detail nor does it wish to give potential thieves ideas , but to ensure cat and dog safety the following information is given

Cats and dogs are territorial although a small percentage may stray or roam or are killed on the roads, a large percentage of family pets are stolen. Pet thieves fall into several categories

1. The well organised pet thieves. Once stolen these untraceable items (Pets) are quickly moved interstate and resold by unscrupulous dealers , or by the thieves themselves from bogus addresses to unsuspecting buyers .

2. The ransom pet thief. Who holds the pet until a large reward is displayed in newspapers returns the pet and collects the reward as a (Mr Good Guy).

3. The merchant pet thief. Who steals for the Asian food market the European fur and pelt trade, scientific and experimental laboratories and dog fighting rings.

4. The innocent pet thief. Unfortunately many children bring home pets that are not their property. Once home the children are usually told by their parents, it is not your pet, we don't own it , we can not afford it , put it out. (This contributes to the abandoned pet problem)

5.  The yard sweeper pet thief. These pet thieves steal your pets , your B.B.Q , motor mower and any other items left unsecured

Cats and dogs are stolen from areas of high pet population. Areas near major highways are targets also large housing estates nevertheless isolated dwellings and country towns are also at risk
